MARY LOU MULVIHILL, PHD, was a dedicated author, writer, teacher, wife, and friend. Dr. Mulvihill authored Editions One, Two, Three, and Four of this text Human Diseases, A Systemic Approach. This book is dedicated to her memory; Dr. Mulvihill died during the final preparation of the Fourth Edition. It was an honor to have her as an author. She is remembered for her generosity of spirit and enthusiasm for life. May this text be a lasting tribute to a life lived fully, and in service to others.
MARK ZELMAN, PHD, is Chair of the Biology Department at William Rainey Harper College in Palatine, Illinois. He enjoys teaching a variety of biology courses, including Human Anatomy, Microbiology, and Introduction to Human Disease. At home, he teaches backyard bird- and bat-watching to his sons, Joseph and Thomas, who are his favorite students. In addition, Dr. Zelman is learning all about native gardening from his wife, Lisa, who is his favorite teacher.
PAUL A. HOLDAWAY, MA, a native of Indiana, a "Hoosier," attended and graduated from Indiana State University with a Master of Arts degree. Paul became an instructor at Indiana State University and later served as Head of Science at a community college. He is now a senior member of the Biology Department at William Rainey Harper College in Palatine, Illinois. He takes pleasure in a wide range of biological and clinical interests. At William Rainey Harper College, Professor Holdaway teaches Human Diseases, Human Anatomy, and Human Physiology.
ELAINE TOMPARY, PHARMD, is an accomplished pharmacist who has assisted various medical and pharmaceutical institutions. She has sought additional challenges and, in the process, has gained solace and satisfaction through teaching and encouraging others to reach higher plateaus. Dr. Tompary coordinates a pharmacy technology program and teaches classes in Pharmacy, Nursing, Biology, and Allied Health. She is currently on staff at William Rainey Harper College in Palatine, Illinois. She is a devoted wife to Drew, and a loving mother to Christopher and Andriana. Her hope and inspiration is her faith which aids in her desire to serve others.
JILL TURCHANY, PHD, received her PhD in Microbiology from the University of California at Davis. She received and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in infectious diseases at the University of California at San Diego, where she studied the parasite Giardia lamblia. Dr. Turchany has published several scientific papers, as well as non-majors and a majors laboratory manual. She has been teaching for six years, the last five have been at Rock Valley College, Rockford, Illinois. Dr. Turchany teaches Biology for majors, Biology for non-majors, Anatomy and Physiology, Human Diseases, and Microbiology.
