The tragic situation in Northern Ireland has been well described as the world's prototype of an intractable political conflict with correlations in nationalism and religion. This book explores the current conflict between "Ireland and Great Britain" with scholarly impartiality, presenting an able, fair and singularly unbiased picture of the Irish scene in which so much blood has been spilled - Irish, English, Scottish and Welsh.

Review:
-Covering the whole period of the 'Troubles' and concentrating on the events of the last few years, the author is objective, perceptive and right up-to-date. I have always been impressed by the accuracy of his information and the penetrating quality of his analysis...He brings to this work the objectivity of a writer who is outside the cycle of events combined with a very close and detailed familarity with the personalities involved, plus a quite exceptional understanding of things Irish... You'll have difficulty in finding a more balanced or more reliable book.- (Tomas Cardinal O'Fiaich, Archbishop of Armagh, Ireland)
-The author is in a singular position to write about the problem of Northern Ireland. His account of the dilemmas posed by different version of truth and justice reminds us of the political and compassionate insights of Reinhold Niebuhr.- (Robert J. Myers, President, Carnegie Council on Ethics and International Affairs, New York)
-'Blood on the Shamrock' is more than a tour-de-force of research and analysis. It is also a clear-minded plea, from history itself, for reason and healing in a quarrel that has gone on for far too long.- (Kevin Starr, University of Southern California)
-When 63 of 64 convictions are set aside on appeal one cannot resist the conclusion that something is rotten in the system that led to the convictions in the first place. (The author) persuasively argues that confidence in impartial justice must be restored before reconciliation can even be a possibility.- (John I. Noonan, Judge, United States Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit, San Francisco)
-This is an important book and while there continues the Northern Ireland problem, it will remain a source of reference.- (John Kavanagh, The Irish Post)
-Where to turn for a fair, objective and impartial account of the dramatic story behind the violence that has become so newsworthy? 'Blood on the Shamrock' is a detailed account and unbiased study of the facts.- (Maura Ciarrocchi, Today's Catholic)
-...one of the best and most comprehensive accounts of the tragedy of the six counties in northeast Ireland. ... Bishop Hurley, in one book, has summed up the tragedy in an accurate, concise and vivid way. ... This book can and will help Americans understand the tragedy and become instruments for peace, justice and an end to the institutionalized discrimination and brutality that has been allowed to go on for far too long. ... Order the book; read it; and become a channel of actions and words for justice for all in the six counties.- (Jacqueline Beusse, The Catholic Advocate)
