From the Author:
This book was written because history tends to get lost.
So few people remember that Shirley Chisholm was the first woman to run for president in a major party, that many, even newspaper journalist think that Libby Dole will be the first.

I had one mother tell me that she thought that Barbara Jordan was Michael Jordan's mother. This is the kind of information that we need to combat with actual history. African American women have come a long way in politics. It appears as though their strides accompanied that of European American women, but that is not the case. At times, the people who stood in the way of progress for African American women were European American women. Black women have had to fight to get a place in both the civil rights movement, the women, suffrage movement and the political movements in America, this, even though they participated in all of them.

This book is a way of beginning to speak to that lost history and to begin to give young women of all races a chance to see what fortitude, hard work, and perserverance can do.
