"World Literature: 1800 to the Present" is a survey of major world writing from the dawn of the Romantic movements in the nineteenth century to the present day. It begins with figures such as Rousseau, Goethe, and Schiller, and concludes with major contemporary works including writing from Third World Culture. As the nineteenth century opened, the European literary consciousness was dominated by the towering figure of Goethe and by Romantic poets such as Schiller. The rise of the continental European novel encompassed figures such as Stendhal, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Balzac, and Flaubert, while major dramatists included Ibsen and Chekhov. The twentieth century witnessed radically new techniques and ideas through such writers as Thomas Mann, Franz Kafka, Jean-Paul Sartre, Samuel Beckett, and Jean Genet. This volume brings the literary picture up to the present with discussions of post-modernists, third-World writers such as Gabriel Garcia-Marquez, and voices from Africa, India, China and Japan. ● ToC: Chronology.
