Interest in works by outsider artists, including artists with disabilities, has reached the mainstream. Beginning in the late 1980's and early 1990's with an interest in folk art, outsider art is now an established movement, and is seen every year in shows nationally and internationally. Creative Growth Art Center, located in Oakland, California, is the oldest and largest non-profit visual art center in the US providing innovative art programs to adults with developmental, physical, mental, and emotional disabilities. The more than 120 adults enrolled in the program create imaginative, beautiful, and surprisingly well-executed works, and receive proceeds from the sale of these works. For many of these artists, this income is their primary source of financial independence. This book features full-page photographic portraits of 55 Creative Growth artists, alongside a piece of their artwork, by nationally-renowned photographer Leon Borensztein. In addition, each spread includes a color photograph of another of that artist's works, and a short statement from the artist. Borensztein's photographs portray each artist, even the most severely disabled, in an honest, positive, and sympathetic light. The photos and text capture the artists' personal connection to their work, and offer the viewer a window onto each artist's unique perception of the world.
