This is a large, stunning, comprehensive book on Matthew Barney's Cremaster cycle, an epic five-part film project accompanied by related sculpture, photographs, and drawings. In May, 2002, Barney will premiere the final installment of the cycle, Cremaster 3. There will also be a related exhibition that will travel to several European cities (and possibly to the United States, in 2003). This book will function as an atlas to the entire Cremaster cycle, revealing Barney's working process and tracing the interconnected narrative threads of the project as a whole. The book will feature all of the sculptures and installations related to the Cremaster cycle in addition to the artist's storyboards, concept drawings, and research material. Four major essays will articulate the cycle's various themes and explore Barney's innovative and unprecedented aesthetic vocabulary. Authors include Barney specialists Thyrza Nichols Goodeve and Neville Wakefield and Guggenheim Museum curator Nancy Spector. The book will also include interviews with the key collaborators in the Cremaster project: actors in the films, choreographers, costume designers, and technicians.
