Synopsis
Since 1850, China has undergone urban industrialization, conquest by foreign powers, civil wars, changing governments, and an opening to the international community. This period has also seen atristic experimentation and innovation. Spanning 150 years of artistic production, this book offers an exploration of modern and contemporary Chinese art. Essays show the ways in which Chinese artists have enagaged with modernity, tradition, self-definition, and the adoption and rejection of Western conventions. The book includes Shanghai School paintings, modern calligraphy, commercial art, 1920s and 30s woodblock prints, modern "guohua" (traditional ink and colour paintings), socialist realist paintings, and other contemporary works.

This book has very faint shelf wear along the bottom edge, black mark on the top edge of pages near spine, otherwise it is in very good condition, pages are nice and clean and the binding is tight. The dust jacket has light wear around the edges, 4 inch tear to the back cover at the spine and opposite edge with creasing between the tears, however the dust jacket is in a mylar cover, otherwise it is in good condition.
