The scourge of human trafficking affects virtually all countries, which serve as a source, transit point, or destination, or a combination of these. While countries have long focused on international trafficking, internal movement and exploitation within countries may be even more prevalent than trans-border trafficking. Patterns of trafficking vary across countries and regions and are in a constant state of flux. Countries have long focused on trafficking solely for the purpose of sexual exploitation, yet exploitation in agriculture, construction, fishing, manufacturing, and the domestic and food service industries are common in many countries. Here, Aronowitz takes a global perspective in examining the nefarious underworld of human trafficking, revealing the nature and extent of the harm caused by this hideous criminal practice. Taking a victims-oriented approach, Human Trafficking, Human Misery examines the criminals and criminal organizations that traffic and exploit their victims. The author focuses on the different groups of victims as well as the various forms of and markets for trafficking, many of which remain overlooked because of the emphasis on sex trafficking. She also explores less frequently discussed forms of trafficking--in organs, child soldiers, mail-order brides, and adoption, as well as the use of the Internet in trafficking. Drawing on her field experiences from various parts of the world, the author deepens our understanding of this issue through descriptions of cases in which she was involved or about which she learned in the course of her travels. Together with insightful analysis, these stories reveal the true nature of human trafficking and illustrate the extent of its reach and harm.

Product Description:
Unusual book
Review:
"A rare feat. Alexis Aronowitz brings scholarly integrity and detail to a field where crude generalizations and moral crusading so often prevail. This book brings the much-needed fresh ammunition to one of the major campaigns for global justice of our times."-Jan Van Dijk, Professor of Victimology, Tilburg University, The Netherlands, Former Director of the Centre for International Crime Prevention, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime

"Aronowitz's book provides an easily accessible and global analysis of the growing problem of human trafficking. Her comprehensive approach addresses important and rarely discussed aspects of human trafficking such as organ trafficking and child soldiers along with the more widely known problem of sexual trafficking."-Dr. Louise Shelley, Director, Terrorism, Transnational Crime and Corruption Center, Professor, School of Public Policy, George Mason University

"This book presents a most captivating and thorough account of trafficking in human beings in the context of a globalized world of the 21st century. This publication, unlike many others, provides a full account of the extent of human misery, crime and the exploitation of those misusing democracy, mobility as well as human rights and civic liberties. It is a fascinating reading for all those who seek to deepen their knowledge of the international community and its reaction to the ever growing trade with human beings, the new form of slavery of the 21st century."-Peter von Bethlenfalvy, Director IOM Vienna/Head of Special Liaison Mission to the OSCE and International Organizations, IOM Ambassador to the UN

"Human trafficking is an ugly crime. Its brutalized victims generate vast profits, and many of them are being used and abused in the cities and towns where we live. Human trafficking is also a hidden crime. Governments, human rights groups, and all the rest of us, are struggling to understand how it fits into the lives of our communities and economies. Now we have help: Alexis Aronowitz has written a lucid and concise introduction to human trafficking. Based on impeccable research and years of experience, she shines a light on the modern slave trade. This book is perfect for student and educational use, or for anyone wanting a clear and unbiased understanding of human trafficking today."-Dr. Kevin Bales, Academic and world reknowned expert on modern-day slavery, Author of best-seller Disposable People, President of Free the Slaves

"Dr. Aronowitz's academic background, coupled with her extensive work with various international organizations, makes the book a most valuable contribution to understanding the global phenomenon of trafficking."-Edna Erez, LL.B., Ph.D. Professor and Head, Department of Criminology, Law, and Justice, University of Illinois at Chicago

"The approach of the book is universal and detailed, putting together all important elements for a comprehensive understanding of trafficking in human beings and, thus, becoming a valuable learning tool for policy makers, academics, institutions and the concerned public."-Marco Gramegna, Former President, Experts Group on Trafficking in Human Beings of the European Commission
