This elegant Latin-English "en face "translation of "The Christiad "is based on the second edition of 1550 and is the first new English translation since the eighteenth century.First published in 1535 at Cremona, "The Christiad "received immediate, international acclaim. Altogether, it went through some sixty printings or editions in Latin and remains the only memorable epic poem of the Italian Renaissance that survives. In view of the importance of the poem for students of Renaissance and later epic poetry in general and Milton in particular, it is curious, according to Gertrude C. Drake and Clarence A. Forbes, that it has not been published with an English translation since the eighteenth century. Hence the major purpose of this edition is to provide students of humanism, vernacular "belles lettres, "and the Bible with an easily accessible Latin text if scholars read the language with fair ease, and with an accurate English version if they do not.Professor Drake edited the Latin text. Both authors worked on the translation, with Professor Forbes, however, being ultimately responsible for the accuracy of the English version."

Latin and English on facing pages. The Christiad is a 16th century Italian epic poem in six books, a work which Milton explicitly admired and imitated in his depictions of Satan. It is said to be the only readable Latin epic from the Renaissance. The Christiad of course is to Virgil as Virgil is to Homer just as a Roman epic is required to match Homer, so a Christian epic is needed. Inscribed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # ABE-1510795762192
