This book brings together experiences, voices, analyses and diverse viewpoints which capture the complexity and intensity of the developments leading up to and following the destruction of Babri Masjid mosque in Ayodhya in 1992. The contributors demonstrate vividly that communal violence in India is based primarily on imagined fears, constructed by a regressive political process that must be countered. They examine specific violent incidents and also the broader forces which have shaped the rise of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Review:
`A very rich collection of essays with some solid and suggestive individual chapters' - Asian Journal of Political Science

`Ayodha, the town in Uttar Pradesh where Hindu fanatics destroyed the Babri Masjid mosque in December 1992, claiming it to be built on the site of the god Ram's birthplace, marked a violent watershed in Indian politics. The destruction was followed by anti-Muslim riots in various parts of the country. Behrampada, the less familiar placename in the title of this collection of nineteen papers, refers to a muslim ghetto in Bombay which was one of the worst hit. Fortuitously, a film crew was nearby and was able to record both the violence and the subsequent impact on the lives of the inhabitants. Three papers deal with the making of the film and offer an analysis of what actually happened in Behrampada. Other papers contain eyewitness accounts of the impact of Ayodhya in different parts of India; the remainder take a more distanced, academic view of the context within which the violence occured.' - Asian Affairs
