The paintings for this book took four years to create.
The characters were based on cats I have owned or known. Along with various human family members, I took many pictures of cats in various poses and used both humans and felines as models. Much of the research for the settings was done in Norway, a country I had originally discovered as a college student many years ago. Although I don't knit or weave, I have been collecting antique Norwegian patterns in these and other handcrafts, and these found a purpose in the form of costumes and home furnishings represented in the story. I was happy to illustrate The Fisherman And His Wife because I think Rosemary Wells has retold a tale with a timely moral for a society so involved in consumerism. This story appealed to me, not only because of my love for Norway and for cats, but because of its strong and direct ethic. Children understand and are reassured by its message.
