Biography of Indian Christian in the British Raj
This is a biography of Vedanayagam Samuel Azariah (1874-1945), bishop of the Anglican Church in India from 1912 until his death in 1945. As both an effective evangelist to Indian villagers and a respected bishop in the British church hierarchy, Azariah provided a unique bridge between ordinary Indians and British elites. He was a popular leader in rural Andhra, builder of Protestant unification within India, and a pioneer in the Christian ecumenical movement globally. The fundamental religious and political disagreements between Azariah and Gandhi prevented them from joining forces in their common missions to India's poor, and eventually brought them into serious conflict with each other over religious freedom. Azariah was never able to escape his powerful critic's negative campaigns against both his life's work of Christian evangelism and British rule. These criticisms obscured his historical legacy, so that Azariah lives in the shadow of the Mahatma as much today as he did during his lifetime.
