A non-illustrated reissue of "The Message of the Bible", this book was written to show how the Bible is relevant in our own times. How can the Bible's teaching, written in the ancient world, be validly interpreted so that it teaches us God's principles for living in the varied societies of our own world? The aim is to get the reader started by giving an overview with plenty of examples. The overview is given through the introductions to each Bible book. These explain what each book says and show its relevance. The outlines serve the same purposes. The examples are the key passages, about 200 of which have been selected from the whole Bible. These show how to understand and apply the Bible's message today. Summaries of the central Bible teachings with reference to aid personal study make up a separate section and take readers to the heart of Bible teaching.

The Archbishop of Canterbury wants people to read the Bible. And, as consulting editor of this book, he sets out to help them do that. Defining the Bible as "God's message to us, intended to shape our living and thinking," he says that "it is worth becoming practised and skilled at understanding what the Bible means."
The Bible for Everyday Life is aimed at those new to the Bible as well as those looking for a fresh approach to understanding it. George Carey is convinced we need to read the Bible daily and draw strength from it in all life's situations and problems. The book's first chapters cover topics like "How to read the Bible" and "Tracing Bible Origins". Its much larger main section introduces each of the 66 books of the Bible by giving an outline of the book's content, an explanation of its main themes and a study of chosen passages. The last part of the book tackles the biblical teaching on 48 central Christian beliefs such as the Ascension, Love, Prophecy, Baptism, Discipleship and the Cross.
Carey has called upon an international team of contributors: it includes university professors in Yugoslavia, Nigeria and Denmark, ministers in Australia and the USA, researchers in Brazil and several theology lecturers in England. Maps and charts throughout the book help to illustrate their words. --Al Horn
The Rt Revd and Rt Hon. George Carey, Baron Carey of Clifton, PC, FKC, was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1991 to 2002.
