Review

"Feisty, impulsive and chatty, Belle Appleman is a welcome addition to Boston's growing population of female amateur detectives." -- "Publishers Weekly"

From the Author

Why "Death and Blintzes" is interesting reading.
Belle Appleman, the amateur detective and heroine of "Death and Blintzes", exemplifies the optimism and hope of American life during the Great Depression. And when she pushes her nose into murders, you can bet that the killers don't stand a chance. As authors of this novel, we tried to bring the period of the mid-1930's back to life. As one reviewer wrote: "This novel is set in the Depression but it's anything but depressing." The New York Times Book Review wrote, "There is no desperate attempt to recreate the period of the 1930's. Yet the flavor comes through, especially when the authors get wrapped up in the role of labor unions during the Roosevelt years..."Death and Blintzes" has a curious charm." And about Belle herself, the reviewer in Harvard Magazine wrote: "Like one of the great actresses she is always imitating--Bette Davis, Greta Garbo, or Myrna Loy--Belle Appleman moves through this book as if in a movie of her own. The mystery possesses a blend of nostalgia, humor, and intrigue, whose simplicity recalls the time it portrays." And from another reviewer: "...food is practically a subplot in this book..."

Fine in near fine dust jacket, not price clipped, in protective mylar cover. "It's the Depression, and young widow Belle Appleman is grateful for her new job tacking belt loops on men's pants in a Boston factory. Then she discovers a co-worker's body in the Charles River and, feeling personally involved, begins trading theories with the detective in charge of the case. In the midst of her sleuthing, she's elected shop steward and becomes involved with union politics, as well as with a dashing union leader on whom she tries out her Bette Davis voice and Garbo look. But when one of the factory owners is also murdered and a friend is accused, Belle must make serious efforts to find the killer, for her heart's sake as well as for her friend's. Feisty, impulsive and chatty, Belle Appleman is a welcome addition to Boston's growing population of female amateur detectives." -- Publishers Weekly. Book. Seller Inventory # 020342
