Synopsis

In a fascinating dual biography of these two American expatriates, Brenda Wineapple tells the story of a powerful, poignant relationship rooted in love, longing, and smoldering rivalry, a relationship so profound that when it ruptured in 1914, sister and brother never spoke to each other again. Wineapple reconstructs those exciting turn-of-the-century years when Gertrude and Leo fell in love with the people and ideas that later helped drive them apart. In this, the first biography to be written about Leo Stein - and the first completely researched book about Gertrude to appear in more than twenty years - Wineapple unearths a wealth of new and rare material, including an early Gertrude Stein manuscript, printed here for the first time.

Review

Central to avant-garde Paris in the early years of this century, Gertrude Stein grew into a cult figure, a proponent of modernist experimentation and a writer who inspired such authors as Ernest Hemingway and Sherwood Anderson. Less well known is her brother, Leo Stein, who amassed an incredible collection of early modern art and helped paved the way for his sister's modernist exploration. In this biography, Brenda Wineapple traces the story of the Steins' eventful life and their own relationship, which ended with a complete break.

Review

"Brenda Wineapple brilliantly disentwines the record of Stein's life from the images of it that Stein and her allies created." -- San Francisco Chronicle "Wineapple tells a dramatically compelling story; her analysis is insightful, her meticulous documentation unobtrusive. She has written an absorbing account of two extraordinary siblings." -- Washington Post "Wineapple... does an impressive job of setting down the facts of the Steins' eventful lives. Sister Brother is laden with information about everything from the treatment of Jews at Harvard in the 1890's to the prevailing theories about homosexuality." -- New York Times "Wineapple... does an impressive job of setting down the facts of the Steins' eventful lives.
