Guinea Pigs are tailless, plant-eating mammals of the family Caviidae that originated in South America. They are relatives of the porcupine and chinchilla and have long been considered rodents. In 1991, the genetic classification of the guinea pig came into question after an article in Nature magazine seemed to suggest they aren't rodents after all. Although most experts still place them in the rodent category, the scientific debate continues. Guinea pigs were first domesticated by the Moche people of Peru, who kept them as a food source. They were also used for medicinal purposes and as sacrificial animals. The Moche began domesticating guinea pigs between 2500 and 5000 BC; an exact date is difficult to pinpoint due to a lack of written records or any solid fossil evidence. However, mummified guinea pigs, as well as statues depicting them, have been found in this region of coastal Peru, indicating their strong presence in Moche culture.
