Synopsis

Here for the first time in book form are three of Giff Cheshire's finest Western short novels. In Comanche Prairie, Torp Toynbee has been appointed trail boss over a herd, only to later be falsely accused of murder. Escaping from jail, how much can he do as a fugitive to prove his innocence? River of Gold finds immigrant Mike Trahan building a barge to take advantage of the river trade in wheat, only to have everything upset by the discovery of gold in California. A blizzard is pending in No Man's Range and desperation forces small cattleman Bart Tyler to kidnap the woman preventing him from moving his herd onto winter range. Gambler Dandy Bob Roberts is the best-dressed denizen of Gila City, Arizona Territory. Old Man Duggan, the hostler at the livery barn, is the town drunk. Duggan will regale anyone with the price of a drink with his adventures fighting Apaches. Roberts would like to filch the assay report that's in the mail. The adventures of this unlikely duo, as one tries to save the mail and the other to steal it, is in the tradition of Mark Twain's Roughing It and Bret Harte's stories of mining camps.
