'Yes, that's a good description of you, a cultured handmaiden. So agreeable, so polite, so damned eager to please, you let people wipe their boots on you.' Such was the parting label placed on Jinny Brownlow by a man she thought had cared for her. It was a label she would not find easy to peel off, for at twenty - one, Jinny was basically alone in the world, working with a marked lack of job satisfaction in the typing pool of a big engineering firm in the Tyneside town of Fellburn, her main outside interest the local amateur theatre group where again the only part she ever seemed to play was that of a general dogsbody. The case, however, was about to be altered. At the office she was suddenly called upon to stand in as secretary to the formidable head of the firm Bob Henderson, whose blunt manner and rough edged tongue immediately provided one fresh and highly stimulating challenge. Another followed later that same day with an unexpected visit from Hal Campbell, leading light of the Fellburn players, displaying a touching concern for her personal problems and inviting her to Sunday lunch with the three stepchildren he had acquired from two unsuccessful marriages. Both were older men, both had demands to make of her, but each in his very different way would prove an essential catalyst in the reshaping of Jinny's whole future pattern of life.
