This anthology provides a range of fiction by a selection of Canada's contemporary Native writers. Included are short stories and excerpts from novels - plus a scene from "The Rez Sisters" by award-winning playwright Tomson Highway - by nineteen writers, including Harry Robinson, Jeanette Armstrong, Basil Johnston, Ruby Slipperjack, Daniel David Moses, J.B. Joe, Joan Crate, Thomas King, and Jovette Marchessault. The majority of the selections are informed by aspects of traditional Native culture; others focus on Indians in a contemporary world. Still others have transcended these boundaries altogether. Thomas King's introduction provides insight into this multi-faceted literature. He explodes the common myths and misunderstandings, and discusses both the shared aspects of Native fiction and the diversity and potential of writing which translates a traditional culture into contemporary literary form. This book is intended for students and researchers in Canadian studies and literature.
