This thematically arranged anthology encourages the reader's response to a diverse selection of literature, including the essay. Four introductory chapters illustrate ways of responding to and writing about literature, with numerous examples of student writing. Eight thematic chapters follow, with a balance of new and traditional voices, including less frequently anthologized selections from canon writers as well as many works by women, minorities, and writers from other countries. A final chapter presents three poets for in-depth study: Elizabeth Bishop, Robert Frost, and Langston Hughes; in addition, a 32-page full-color section pairs 16 poems with the works of art that inspired them or vice versa.

From the Publisher:
Emphasis on reader response.
Balance of new and traditional voices in numerous fresh readings, including less frequently anthologized selections from "canon" writers as well as many works by women, minorities, and writers from other countries.
Nonprescriptive guidelines for writing about literature: Chapter 2 offers an informal introduction to literary terms. Chapter 3 provides an overview of genre and basic concepts of literary criticism. Chapter 4 discusses six different purposes for writing (including researched writing); student papers illustrate each of the purposes discussed.
Examples of student writing: notes, journal entries, sample drafts, and revised papers by student writers-including examples of collaborative work.
A 32-page full-color section that pairs 16 poems with the works of art that inspired them or vice versa.
An appendix on MLA documentation, with numerous examples.
An exceptional Instructor's Manual with invaluable tips for beginning teachers.
A new thematic chapter, "Crime and Punishment," replaces the chapter on work.
Over fifty new selections have been added (denoted by an asterisk in the table of contents).
Langston Hughes is now one of the three poets presented for in-depth study.
Five new pairs of poems and artworks have been added to the full-color section.
Each selection carries its original date of publication.
Wakako Yamauchi's play "And the Soul Shall Dance" is now included; references to it and to Yamauchi's short story by the same title (also included) illustrate a comparison of genre treatments, in Chapter 3.
Additions to Chapters 1-4 address the terms "protagonist" and "antagonist," cultural context, and the debate over whether a response to literature can be "right" or "wrong."
Evocative questions now introduce each thematic chapter.
