Comment on the purpose of the book
The book is not intended to be a history of jazz, nor a critical analysis of the music of the ten individuals. Nor is the book meant to "break new ground" for serious students of jazz. The intent of the book is to whet the interest of youngsters in grades in grades 6-11 who have difficulty reading, or who are unmotivated readers. My hope is that the book will provide the reader with a bit of information about a uniquely American phenomenon, jazz, and might serve as a catalyst for further reading.
