Wild Women and Tricky Ladies celebrates the female trick riders and other performers who have been a part of Wild West shows, races, rodeos, and fairs since the 1800s right up to the present day. On the heels of her successful The Cowgirl’s Cookbook, cowgirl author Jill Charlotte Stanford showcases the lives and philosophies of the women of the rodeo arena. In the early days, Bertha Blancett excelled at Roman riding at the Pendleton Round-Up, winning the race and the purse countless times. Others dazzled the crowds throughout the rodeo and fair circuit of the 1920s. Fox Hastings ran away from her California home and convent school when she was fourteen and started her rise in rodeo on bucking horses and with trick riding. Florence Hughes made more than 500 rodeo appearances and was World Champion Cowgirl Trick Rider ten times—the only woman to turn a backward somersault from the back of one horse to another, and the only woman to even try. Riding tricks such as the fender drag, the tail drag, the suicide drag, and the Hippodrome stand are still practiced today by modern-day trick riders, including rising new star “Kamikaze Kowgirl” Erin Mullis.
Combining fabulous archival photography, first-hand accounts of life on the rodeo circuit, and the author’s appreciative eye for the wild women of the Old West, Wild Women and Tricky Ladies is a stirring testament to the feats of these fearless cowgirls.|Wild Women and Tricky Ladies celebrates the female trick riders and other performers who have been a part of Wild West shows, races, rodeos, and fairs since the 1800s right up to the present day.
