Russian-Jewish women revamped a male tradition of learning and continued a female tradition of independent female breadwinners, combining these traits with the egalitarianism and practical bent of Russian nihilism. About the Author:

Luise Hirsch was educated at Heidelberg University and at Freie Universitat Berlin, Germany. She received her Ph.D. in Jewish history from the University of Duisburg in 2005.
