The story of Ford Motor Company s Model T is the story that launched the American automobile industry--and America s love affair with the car. When he introduced the Model T in 1908, even an eternal optimist like Henry Ford could not have predicted the far-reaching changes he was setting in motion. One hundred years later, this illustrated history looks back at the beloved Tin Lizzie. The book follows the Model T from design considerations (its ground clearance, for instance, had to allow for the abysmal state of U.S. roadways at the time) to its lasting legacy, and along the way describes the mechanical, manufacturing, and marketing innovations that the car s production entailed. Author Lindsay Brooke also relates the adventures and misadventures that were part of owning and driving a Model T. He chronicles the changes the car s unprecedented popularity wrought in the auto industry (including Ford s introduction of the $5 day ), and he tracks the Model T through popular culture, from its role in early motorsports to its resurgent popularity in the 1950s and 60s as a platform for T-bucket hot rods. Illustrated throughout with period art and evocative photography, this book celebrates as never before the car that epitomized the American automobile. One hundred years after the introduction of the Model T, this illustrated history looks back at the car that launched the American automobile industry. We follow the Tin Lizzie from design considerations (its ground clearance, for instance, had to allow for the abysmal U.S. roadways) to its lasting legacy, along the way witnessing the mechanical, manufacturing, and marketing innovations the car s production entailed. The adventures and misadventures of owning and driving a Model T; the changes the car s popularity brought to the auto industry (including Ford s introduction of the $5 day ); and the Model T s place in motorsports and hot rodding--all are part of the story of the car that epitomized the American automobile.

Review:
Over 208 pages, respected US writer Brooke covers a wealth of' Tin Lizzie' themes, from early motoring to today's thriving club scene. What makes the book such a good introduction are the boxes highlighting patent battles, key engineers, performance options and start-up tips. The impressive photo selection complements enjoyable chapters on Life with Lizzie, commercial variants and competition history. An added bonus is the story of a 1922 Touring model nicknamed 'Old Charley'. Present owner Bryan Ostergren drove the car some 2400 miles across the USA to the Stapp Ford Agency, in Kentucky, where it was originally sold, to celebrate the car's 80th birthday. --Motor Books

The Model T's place in American and global automotive history is profound. It's been a long time since there has been a good book on the Model T. Thankfully, the good folks at Motorbooks recognized the need and stepped up on this 100th Anniversary. The chapter possibly most interesting to Rodz readers will be the one about Racing and Rodding the T and that is where many older books on the Model T fell short. Lots of those were written by folks who thought that only the Antichrist would hot road a Model T. Truth is, Model T's have been raced hot rodded since the beginning. This chapter covers it in detail. There's some cool stuff in there. Ford Model T is a superb book. I highly recommend it --Old School Rodz
Synopsis:
The story of the Ford Motor Company's Model T is the story of the world's first successful mass-produced automobile, affectionately known as the Tin Lizzie or Flivver, with an astonishing 15 million produced between 1908 and 1927! Henry Ford was not the first man to dream about producing an automobile for the mass public - Benz had tried several times, and so had Oldsmobile Curved Dash - but he was the first to be successful, with a combination of drive, ambition, pricing, marketing, shrewd and ruthless dealing, and the setting up of the world's first mass-production assembly line. Even an inveterate optimist and driven man like Ford could have not predicted the far-reaching changes this one car, launched in 1908, would set in motion; his idea of a low-cost, easy maintenance , reliable "universal car" has changed our world and lives for good. One hundred years later, this illustrated history looks back at the beloved Tin Lizzie, and charts its history.

Design considerations - high ground clearance to allow for the abysmal state of the roads at the time - construction, and the lasting legacy this has left on our world, taking in the mechanical, manufacturing, and marketing innovations that the car's production entailed. Truly a book for any car enthusiast!
