November 1989. The fall of the Berlin Wall. One man is caught between East and West...

Review:
Henry Porter's well-informed engrossing thrillers have previously dealt with today's headlines; Brandenburg is a powerful novel of espionage and betrayal set a mere decade and a half ago, in what is now an entirely different world. Art historian Rosenharte is compelled by the East German secret police to act as liaison with a British spy--they have arrested his brother's family--and finds himself caught in an endlessly recomplicated web of lies. It is more a question of how many factions Rosenharte can play off against each other before he is caught than of simple intelligence work--he lives in a society which is going into terminal meltdown, but the evil old men and their minions can still have people shot on a whim, for a few weeks more. This is a stunning evocation of the Cold War at its nastiest, and a salutary reminder of what it was about. Rosenharte is an attractive compromised hero--we find ourselves longing for this switchback plot to take him to safety and emotional fulfillment without any logical reason to believe that this is anything other than a story which is bound to end badly. In the end, hope is all he, and we, have. --Roz Kaveney
Review:
¿A compelling spy thriller, combined with the voice of Andrew Sachs, make this a winning recording. A successful venture into John le Carré territory ¿ a complex story set in 1989 where the East is still East and the West is best.¿ (Sue Baker PUBLISHING NEWS)

It's 1989, the Berlin Wall is down and Rudi, working for MI6 in the GDR, could escape to the west but doesn't. His twin brother has been detained by the Stasi. If you thought cold war thrillers were old hat and that, in any case, Deighton and Le Carré had cornered the market, think again. Is this the first novel to feature Vladimir Putin in his KGB days? (Sue Arnold GUARDIAN)

¿Read by one of the masters of spoken word material, Andrew Saches, the drama centres on the Dresden academic and MI6 agent, Dr Rudolph Rossenhart, who, when his security is compromised, faces a stark choice ¿ should he defect to the West, leaving his family to the mercy of the Stasi or return to East Germany to undertake a dangerous assignment under the Stasi¿s suspicious gaze?¿ (Vidar Hjardeng THE BOOK MAGAZINE)

Book Description Paperback. Condition: Very Good. November 1989. The fall of the Berlin Wall. One man is caught between East and West. The Stasi was among the most sophisticated intelligence organisations in the world, but by the end of the 1980s the Orwellian state of East Germany was collapsing around it. The special squads of armed officers, the torture chambers in the Stasi jail, the hundreds of thousands of informers could do nothing to prevent the rebellion that saw the fall of the Berlin Wall. It is in the context of these last few paranoid weeks of the Communist world, when a population that had been oppressed for nearly sixty years found the will to rise up, that this outstanding thriller is set. Its hero is Dr Rudolf Rosenharte, an academic from Dresden and agent for MI6; his controller is Robert Harland, from A SPY'S LIFE and EMPIRE STATE. When Rosenharte's security is compromised he is faced with a stark choice: to defect to the West, leaving his beloved family to the mercies of the Stasi, or return to East Germany to carry out a dangerous assignment under the Stasi's suspicious eye. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. Seller Inventory # GOR002870398
