Synopsis:
Based on Alan Luke's 1983 book, "A History of Littleborough Pubs" and his subsequent research, this new revised edition delves deeper into the history of the area's pubs and beerhouses. The earliest record relating to the brewing of beer in the area was in 1335. Over the centuries the number of inns grew until the early 1870s when licensing laws came into force as the authorities tried to prevent public houses and beerhouses becoming breeding grounds for criminal activity, drunkenness and loutish behaviour. As a result many establishments were closed down. Illustrated with many fascinating photographs, this book gives a detailed A-Z of all the pubs and beerhouses in the area.
