From the Back Cover:
This book does not set out to reveal any great secrets, to throw light on naval strategy, or even gossip of the lives and doings of our great Naval leaders. It is the story of the war at sea as seen by a young submarine officer. In telling it the author draws a vivid picture of the 'daily round and common tasks' of life in submarines, illuminated from time to time by the highlights of quick and decisive action, attack, and counter-attack. Lieutenant Gibson's narrative shows the constant struggle of the Submariner with the element on and in which he works - the sea; and the grand comradeship engendered between officers and men by service in submarines. All submarine operations demand a most exacting standard of team work. Every man in the boat has his individual job and on this the safety of all aboard may depend. Living in inevitable intimacy and dependant on each other, the submariner acquires a deep-rooted confidence and trust in his shipmates that make them 'a band of brothers'.

Even now it is doubtful that the general public, and in particular today's generation, is aware of the great results achieved by the Royal Navy's submarine service; or the sacrifices made by the men who served in this branch of the forces. This book will help, hopefully, to show just what debt of gratitude Britain, and her Allies, owe to all submariners of the nations that helped destroy Hitler's ambitions.

The original text of this book was published soon after the Second World War ended (1947) when much of the Services activity was still surrounded by secrecy. In the text the submarine is never referred to by name and no photographs were ever published. Now that this secrecy no longer exists it seems fitting that this new publication not only establishes the name of Taurus but can also show photographs of the craft together with its officers and men.
