The Romans are renowned for the effectiveness of their building technology. However, as Dr Shirley's pioneering work shows, the foundation of their military structures was the extensive military manpower at their disposal. The construction of a legionary fortress - of which there were 66 in the Empire (10 in Britain) - would have needed many millions of man-hours, so that a single fortress took 2-3 years to build.
Just how the original order to build a fortress was translated into reality is demonstrated by a landscape historian who brings to the task the professional experience of a Chartered Building Surveyor. Drawing in particular on her work on Inchtuthil in Scotland (the only fortress with its complete ground-plan intact), she outlines the general sequence of construction work - for both timber and stone buildings - and explains what a fortress looked like and how it functioned. The materials used, and the structural design of each main type of building and feature, are described, together with the amount of materials and labour needed. Similarly the range and amount of labour needed to extract and make the building materials, to facilitate transport to the site and to provide the necessary food and fodder, are also explained.
In conclusion Dr Shirley argues that the techniques used in this first attempt to analyse in detail how a fortress was built could be extended to other Roman structures, such as a fort or a small town.
