The origins of the town of Aldershot as we know it today date from 1854, the year the Army began its camp here. Coincidentally, this is also the era of the development of photography, and this informative collection of around 200 old photographs and other documents traces the town's history almost from the beginning.
Naturally, many of the images in this compilation feature the Army. The first chapter charts the growth of the town in the early days and the overwhelming part the Army played in its development. Soldiers are portrayed in barracks and in town, as well as preparing for war in 1914 and 1939; on a lighter note, they are seen presenting the popular tattoos and shows which flourished in the inter-war years. However, the civilian side to Aldershot is not neglected. There are chapters on trade, transport, education and leisure pursuits, and one of the town's best-known and much-loved employers - Gale and Polden the printers - is also recalled. Since the Second World War the influence of the Army on the town has waned, and this change is also well documented.
The photographs are drawn from the archives of Aldershot Military Museum and include many gathered by a notable local historian, Lt-Col. Howard Cole. The pictures are accompanied throughout by full, informative captions provided by the Curator of the museum. This fascinating compilation is sure to appeal to all those who know Aldershot and want an insight into how their town grew.
