Review:
For almost a century Variety has been America's leading show- business newspaper, and almost half of this Almanac is devoted to reprinting reviews of every 1998 American film release. Extensive credits are given, together with synopses and incisive comment tailored to US box office potential. There are 16 pages of black-and- white photographs, sections on Superstars and the Personalities of the Year, and a catalogue of births, deaths and marriages. The remainder consists mainly of lists. These include a fully up-to-date chronology of Oscar winners, plus every other important film award, all the world's film festivals, including contact phone numbers and extensive box- office charts by various criteria. A valuable reference for those who need the facts and figures behind the film business, the Almanac is also fascinating to browse, full of information to delight buffs. Subsidiary sections on Television, Theatre, Music, Video and Books are much less comprehensive, together totalling just over a quarter of the book. For instance, rather than reprinting theatre reviews, there is a list of issues of Variety in which the reviews appear. That given, the Almanac is an excellent resource for film fans, with the other sections perhaps best seen as interesting bonus material. -- Gary S. Dalkin
