In 1920, eight-year-old Inga Abbott lives with her mother and grandmother in a large house in Sale, near Manchester. When her mother causes scandal by running away with a married man, Inga is left alone with only her pushy grandmother for company. Margot is determined to make something of her granddaughter and constantly enters her for singing competitions, hoping to make something of Inga's very loud voice. As she grows up, Inga is reunited with her mother, and prefers to stay with her in the poorer area of town, with her new half brother, Ralphie, than to be with her domineering grandmother.
