From the Author:
There is something uniquely fascinating about gladiators, and the times in which they lived. In this book, written for children aged 7 to 11, I have outlined the nature and history of gladiatorial contests, from their beginnings in the 260sBCE as games staged at funerals, to their demise 600 years later. While describing what we know - from historical and archaeological evidence - I have also drawn attention to what we don't know. For instance, we don't know for certain whether a fallen gladiator's fate was decided by the crowd turning their thumbs down or up. Also, contrary to popular belief, there is no evidence that Christians ever died in the Colosseum. Other sections describe beast-fights, chariot racing, and daily life in Rome. The book, which is packed with stunning photographs, ends with a detailed reference section. The consultant, Guy de la Bedoyere, is an expert on Roman Britain, and has written many books on the subject. He is also a TV presenter, and regularly appears on the Channel 4 'Time Team' archaeological series.
