We follow the creation of Pippa's kitchen garden from the early stages where she plans and digs the plot to create the right layout to the successful cultivation of vegetables, fruits and herbs. The plan that Pippa devised is illustrated to show the designated sections for each type of plant she gives useful tips for choosing a plot. A gentle slope that catches the sunshine is perfect. This first section goes on to give advice on preparing and clearing the site of weeds and debris, what is essential for fertile soil and how to naturally protect crops without chemicals. She also addresses the problem of pest and disease prevention, which can be a concern in a chemical-free kitchen garden.
Pippa goes on to give tips on growing individual fruits, vegetable and herbs, including traditional lettuces, root vegetables and summer and winter fruits, but also relative exotica such as radicchio, artichokes, hot peppers and melons. She also shares successful tips, such as harden your tomato plants before transferring them outside, lest they suffer from the sudden change. Practical advice of this sort is abundant and the photographs that accompany the pointers are mouth-watering. The end of the book includes an invaluable sowing and harvesting calendar as well as a list of useful addresses for advice and supplies. Pippa's Organic Kitchen Garden is a convincing and useful introduction to the rewards and challenges of growing your own produce. --Karen Homer
