This book tries to encompass all 'veterinary nursing' and is designed for use by all in veterinary practice. It will be both very useful to trainee and qualified nurses alike. More importantly, it is an ideal source of information for those not undergoing any formal training. Anyone in practice who comes near an animal should have this book to hand. That includes many veterinary surgeons whose academic training may have missed out on some of the more basic requirements. The book is well laid out, making finding a subject relatively easy. It is actually quite useful and refreshing to have practical information shrouded in too much detail. I am pleased to see that the coverage of exotics takes up nearly 60 pages. All in all, this is an extremely useful book, and one that I am sure will become a standard reference in practice...How about going out and buying this book? -- phil hyde the veterinary record 20030901 This well-laid-out, easy-to-read book covers the vast majority of the clinical procedures carried out by veterinary nurses in practice today. It covers all areas of nursing, from very basic restraining techniques through to the more technical activities veterinary nurses are now required to carry out... Each procedure is broken down, point by point, with the rationale for each point. This style of writing makes for a very comprehensive and informative description of each technique. Giving the rationale for each point makes it easy for student veterinary nurses to understand why things have to be carried out in certain ways. When it comes to final examinations, this will help students to give their verbal explanations much more confidently. The sections on the laboratory and diagnostic imaging are, again, written very well, and should make it possible for all veterinary nurses to carry out smears and use a microscope with confidence. The section on radiography covers patient positioning in detail, with good use of diagrams to demonstrate centring and collimating the radiographic beam in the correct location. After reading this, all readers will position their radiography patients correctly! There is not a single chapter that is not relevant to veterinary nursing today. Each chapter is well thought out, with good content. This book will prove to be a valuable educational tool for student veterinary nurses and a good reference guide for qualified veterinary nurses. It meets this aim with ease. The book is easy to read with practical procedures written up in point form. Each step in the procedure is written clearly and a 'rationale' column explains why that step is performed... As well as clearly written text, there are excellent line drawings, demonstrating many tasks and examples of monitoring forms. All in all, this is a 'must-have' book for the veterinary nursing part of the practice library. I guarantee it will be well used.
