Veterinary Epidemiology is the study of disease and other health–related events in animal populations. It seeks to identify the causes and effects of disease, and investigates the ways in which infection is transmitted and maintained. It is therefore fundamental to the prevention and control of disease in livestock and companion animals. Veterinary Epidemiology provides a comprehensive introduction to the role of epidemiology in veterinary medicine. The concepts and principles of epidemiology are explained with illustrations drawn from both large and small animal medicine, and from the developing as well as the developed world. The methodology and interpretation of surveys, observational studies and clinical trials are explored, with emphasis on modern quantitative methods. Veterinary Epidemiology is an invaluable reference source for veterinary general practitioners, government veterinarians, agricultural economists and members of other disciplines interested in animal disease. It will also be essential reading for undergraduate and intermediate–level postgraduate students of epidemiology

This edition includes new problems within veterinary medicine, such as bovine spongiform encephalopathy which has emerged as a serious problem. Rinderpest is still globally being eradicated and there has been an increasing demand for high-quality information on animal disease and productivity. All chapters of the first edition have been revised. Chapter 11 has been modified to take account of the increasing popularity of microcomputers and the rapid development of veterinary information systems. New chapters on clinical trials and comparative epidemiology have been added. More statistical methods are included in Chapters 12-15 and 17. The goal of this edition nevertheless remains the same as that of the first: to provide an introduction to veterinary epidemiology for veterinary undergraduates, postgraduates who have received limited or no training in epidemiology, and practising veterinaries and members of the disciplines with an interest in the subject. Strategies for disease control and eradication are also covered.
