Marie Newton is the daughter of a famous painter, Arthur Newton, and she has inherited much of his skill. Accompanied by her best friend Lucy she attends art school in Paris, and the girls then join Arthur on a trip to America. Edward Clayton is determined to find his real father, from whom he has inherited his talent as an artist. His mother Colette is apprehensive, as Arthur Newton, her former lover, has a wife and daughter who could be hurt by the revelations, but Edward follows clues from Whitby to Paris and America, where he has to face tragedy.
