Chester's Big Surprise is a wonderful, hardback storybook written by a new author, Olivia Villet. It is a story of everyday life that has a background to which children can relate: going to the shops, visiting school, friendships, birth, playing together. However, in this story the principal characters are dogs Chester and Tilda and the plot revolves round the favourite places that Chester visits in order to find Tilda. What a surprise he gets when he finally finds her! The illustrations are simple and uncomplicated, using large blocks of appropriate colour and they offer lots of opportunities for discussion, directly and indirectly related to the story. The text is very natural and childlike.

The book is intended for toddlers but it would be equally appropriate and enjoyable for older children.--Susan Naylor

About the Author:

Olivia Villet sent her work to Bloomsbury unsolicited in a very beautifully painted envelope. From that first contact Chester's Big Surprise was developed. Olivia is already working on another book for Bloomsbury Children's Books. Olivia Villet studied at art college in South Africa where she was born and brought up. She is currently staying in London, hoping to develop her career as an illustrator.
