They were shaped by the South African past, the absurdities of a girls' school, and the pressures to marry at an early age. All three - Romy, Rose and Ellie - died young. Three obscure women, who left nothing but their stories, letters and memories, are brought to life. Lyndall Gordon was born in Cape Town in 1941, and now teaches in Oxford. She is the author of three prize-winning biographies: "Eliot's Early Years", "Eliot's New Life" and "Virginia Woolf: A Writer's Life".
