From the Author

A girl's got to get on in the world, and Gloria just the gir
Lovely - a rags to riches story from Victorian London to the 1960s. I love Gloria, she's so irrepressible. And she shines. Right from the start, when she gets chucked out of the snooty working-class Wharncliffe Gardens Railway Settlement (in those days train drivers had the social status of airline pilots now) because she's ‘not as good as she should be' after falling in love with an Irish boy. So Gloria decides to make her own way in London - and goes straight to the bottom, falling into the hands of the awful Willy Glizzard, a Regent Street pimp. But Gloria picks herself up and makes her way up the social scale against all the odds, founding a perfumery empire and getting seriously rich, and getting even with her enemies. Her husband, Daniel Fox, is her great weakness; and the man she loves all her life, Jamie Reilly, the other. (The huge manor house she buys belongs to the Fox family from City, having married into the Fox family who have fallen on hard times in their two thousand year history.) My favourite character's Willy Glizzard, because he is so awful and loses, and I love the scenes where Gloria's building up the business. The early years of the century was just the time when lotions and makeups were becoming big business in London and I loved doing all the research - very different from the fashion industry today in some ways, identical in others. But most of all Gloria is the star.
