A saga, set in the London Philip Boast has made his own.

From the Author:
A young girl's loss and redemption in Victorian England
Young, deaf Joy Briggs is stolen from her parents' opulent home by a criminal, Jack Riddles, who evades the police chase by hiding in a canal tunnel. Joy is believed dead or sold into the child-brothels, though in fact she's found by canal folk and brought up as one of their own. But memories come back to haunt her, and events she witnessed that bitter December night of her abduction mean there are those who want her dead. As always I tried to write this story as if it really happened. Everything is as authentic as I could make it - the police, London high life and low life and the teeming ‘rookeries' of criminals, but the real star of the book is the canals and the families who passed their lives afloat on the amazing network of waterways built across Britain by the Victorians. Though so peaceful now they were the real highways of their day, and the canal folk were tougher than truckers. The horse-drawn way of life of the canal boats - one horse placidly towing forty tons! - has gone for ever. I recreated everything as faithfully as I could from old records and eyewitness accounts, and this gives the book its very special flavour. My favourite scene is the chase across the aqueduct with galloping horses pulling the special fast planing boats called flying gigs - I had no idea these existed until I turned them up in research. Amazing! And my favourite character? Detective Inspector Bowler. Definitely.
