Now one day the old farmer went out into his fields and planted a lot of turnips; and some of them grew and some of them didn't. But right bang in the middle of one field there was a turnip that grew ... and grew ... and grew ... and grew ... and grew...And so begins the story of the poor, old farmer, struggling with just a few chickens and a couple of fields and the rich and arrogant squire who lives in a fancy house with stables and gardens and fields galore who is so jealous of the enormous turnip and the wealth lavished on the poor farmer by the king that he determines to get the better of him.
The Tale of the Turnip is a clever, funny retelling of an old English tale, enhanced by illustrations which capture the traditional feel of the story while teasing the reader to take a closer look at what is going on in the background.
