Originally published at the end of the nineteenth century in black and white, Michela Guadenzi has skillfully colored Giovanni Vacchetta's inspiring Major Arcana and elegant pip cards. A teacher of art at the Polytechnic of Turin and a patron of the arts, Vacchetta incorporated some Masonic symbolism into this masterful deck. The cards were designed as if he were carving them from marble. The images have a sense of material solidity, yet are characterized by graceful lines. An important historic reproduction modified for modern audiences by the addition of delicate color, this deck will be of interest to collectors and readers alike. Vacchetta was not only a skilled artist but also a scholar and learned iconographist (hence the name: Tarot of the Master).

The companion booklets for most Lo Scarabeo decks are in five languages: English, Spanish, French, Italian, and German.

Review:

"Giovanni Vacchetta produced these wonderful cards in 1893. The designs of the cards, originally rendered in black and white, are delicate and ornate. They contain several variations from the traditional images of the tarot. For instance, the Hermit shows a seated figure, resembling the sage Hermes Trismegistus, reading a book. The card of Strength shows a woman holding a column--an old medieval image for this Trump--in addition to a lion, a more common image associated with the card. The card of the Moon depicts the goddess Diana, armed with a bow and a hound by her side, while the card of The Sun features a nude male violinist. By adding light, graceful colors to Vechhetta's cards, artist Michela Gaudenzi has performed a great service for contemporary tarot lovers."--Sandra Tabatha Cicero, author and illustrator of The Golden Dawn Magical Tarot
