Dr. Peggy Semingson is an assistant professor of Literacy Studies at The University of Texas at Arlington. She holds degrees from The University of Texas at Austin, Texas State University, San Marcos, and the University of California, Santa Barbara. She taught bilingual students for eight years in both Southern California and Texas. She has taught fifth grade, third grade, and was a bilingual reading specialist. Dr. Semingson has published in national and state journals. Her research interests include social contexts of literacy learning, digital pedagogies, and students who face challenges in reading. She is also interested in the historical contexts of literacy learning and the politics of reading particularly as it related to phonics. She was awarded the Jeanne S. Chall Research Grant from Harvard University to use the Chall Collection to pursue research on ways to assist upper-grade students in reading instruction.
Dr. Ann Cavallo earned a B.S. from Niagara University, and two M.S. degrees in Science Education/Biology and a Ph.D. in Science Education from Syracuse University. She holds teaching certification in Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, and General Science, and taught middle and high school science prior to earning her graduate degrees. She has held university faculty appointments at The University of Oklahoma, The University of California-Davis, and Wayne State University, and is currently Associate Dean for Teacher Education and Professor of Science Education at The University of Texas at Arlington. Dr. Cavallo's research investigates students' science learning approaches, reasoning, and acquisition of conceptual understandings in the context of inquiry-based teaching and learning. Dr. Cavallo has over 35 publications in internationally and nationally refereed journals, a book, and several book chapters, and has secured more than $5 million in grants from various funding agencies to support her work. She has made more than 60 presentations at professional conferences, and is active in professional organizations in science and in teacher education.
Dr. Brooke Blevins is an assistant professor of Curriculum and Instruction, with an emphasis in Social Studies Education at Baylor University in Waco. She holds her Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Austin, and her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. Prior to earning her graduate degrees, Dr. Blevins taught high school in Texas. Her research interests include historical thinking as a tool for critical civic engagement, pre-service teacher preparation, inquiry-based learning, and citizenship education. Dr. Blevins' research has been presented at state and national conferences as well as in journal articles.
Dr. Christina Gawlik is an assistant professor of Mathematics Education in the Department of Mathematics & Computer Science at Texas Woman's University. She earned her B.S.Ed. in Middle and Secondary Mathematics Education, and her M.S.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction from The University of Kansas. She attended Kansas State University where she earned her Ph.D. in Curriculum & Instruction with an emphasis in K-16 Mathematics Education. Dr. Gawlik taught high school mathematics before she entered into higher education where she has taught mathematics and education courses at junior colleges and universities. Dr. Gawlik actively presents at national and regional conferences about mathematics education and has collaborative projects with local K-12 teachers.
Dr. Emily Summers is an associate professor of Curriculum and Instruction at Texas State University-San Marcos. Her scholarship emphasizes issues of equity in education including children and youth cultures, as well as the intersections of formal and informal cultures in constructing educative experiences. Her social studies education work includes numerous peer-reviewed publications in national and international journals, professional evaluation, grants, and conference papers. Dr. Summers works in geographically and/or linguistically marginalized school districts classified as urban, rural, or with 50% or more of students maintaining home languages other than English. She has taught in both English and Spanish in K-12 public school classrooms in Texas and in Guatemala.
Dr. Kevin J. White is an assistant professor of Science Education at The University of Texas at Arlington. He holds degrees from Washington State University and the Illinois Institute of Technology. He taught middle and high school science prior to earning his graduate degrees. He has published internationally in the area of science education and has presented numerous times at conferences for the National Science Teachers Association, Association for Science Teacher Education, the National Association for Research in Science Teaching and the European Science Education Research Association. His research interests include the nature of science, model-based learning and conceptual change theory.
