From the foreword: "The only French popular prints that are at all familiar in this country are those produced at Epinal. Images d'Epinal are still in production and modern impressions are easily obtainable. Epinal was, however, only one centre among many, and this exhibition gives a good indication of the great richness of the production from all over France during several centuries. The prints, besides being curious, beautiful and entertaining, are a vital source of information about political, religious and social attitudes in France at different periods. The range in theme, iconography, style and treatment is very wide, with constant cross-reference to contemporary 'fine' art. The difficulty, and falseness, of attempting a total separation of popular and 'fine' engravings is recognised in the planning of the exhibition in which a number of engravings by fine artists is included to show how ideas and styles were adapted for the popular market."
