Synopsis:
A Roman mystery, introducing Septimus Severus Quistus. A graphic murder is solved by Quistus, but trouble is only just beginning: to accuse the murderer by tradition means the death of 1313 innocent slaves. Nero, suspecting Quistus's sympathy with Christian 'terrorists', blackmails him into guarding fiery Christian Princess Claudia on a peace mission to Britain, a quest accompanied not only by the murderer, but also by a malign prosecutor, and a second princess very different from the first. But only when a third princess is revealed does Quistus understand the delicacy and awfulness of his task, and its historic importance to both Rome and Britain. And only at the very end does he find a way to achieve justice for the beautiful murderer and the doomed slaves, as well as the third princess.
