Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. A. F. Kersting (Jacket photograph) (illustrator). First Edition. The Observer's Book of Cathedrals - Observer's Book No. 43. The book was published in just this single printing, with a single jacket design. With 16 full-page plates and over 250 illustrations in colour and black-and-white. ***Near fine in red textured boards with black titles to the spine and front board. The covers are clean and unmarked, with none of the usual fading. No bumps, creases or tears. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding. Page block edges clean. Internally the book is also near fine, with illustrated endpapers. No previous ownership inscriptions or other annotations. No creases or tears. No cracking to the binding. Spine tight. ***In a near fine colour illustrated dustwrapper, which has been price-clipped by the publisher, with a new £1.10 net F. Warne price-sticker to the front flap. The dustwrapper is complete without any loss, with just very slight rubbing and creasing at the extremities, commensurate with age and handling - mainly at the bottom edge of the back panel. No serious creases or tears. No chips or loss. Very slight fading to the red titles on the spine. ***147mm x 95mm. 208 pages including an Architectural Glossary, a seven-page Index, and maps showing the principal cathedrals of Spain, Portugal, Italy, Yugoslavia, Germany and Adjoining Countries at the back of the book. Maps showing all of the cathedrals of England, Wales and principal cathedrals of France are on the rear endpapers. ***'Few of us are left unmoved by the towers and pinnacles of a great cathedral rising above city roofs, and few can resist an invitation to step aside and marvel at its soaring columns and vaults, its rich carving and glass and, if we are fortunate, its music and ceremony. Mr New, a practising architect, tells us first what cathedrals are for, and goes on to explain how they developed in the course of centuries. Detailed descriptions of every cathedral of Britain are accompanied by simplified plans in full colour to indicate at a glance the different styles of building. Not only the Anglican but also the Roman Catholic cathedrals and many abbeys and priories are included in order to broaden our understanding of these great buildings. With the pace of modern travel we are as likely to find ourselves in Erfurt or Evora or Evreux as in our own Ely or Elgin, and the author devotes a generous part of the book to continental examples, explaining their national variations in plan and details. Altogether some 350 cathedrals are covered.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A 1972 first and only printing, in near fine original condition. Whilst the Observer's books from this period are not uncommon, many of the books were handled by children and consequently show a lot of wear and tear. They can prove to be quite hard to track down now in nice condition, especially in the original dustwrapper. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Seller Inventory # OBS036
