For many years visitors have flocked from all over the world to the small village in Germany where Mother Meera has her house. Each weekend her house is filled with visitors who take their turn to sit in front of her and look into her eyes. Her profound gaze and remarkable touch has transformed many of those who have journeyed to see her.
Mother Meera was introduced to the Western world by Andrew Harvey in his book ‘The Hidden Journey’ which has become a bestseller. Martin Goodman, the author of this book, is a former devotee whose life was profoundly affected by his time with this Indian mystic.
This is his journey of awakening. He describes his teacher with respectful admiration and tells the story of her early life in India and the path that has brought her to Germany. For some people she has become a deity, the personification of the feminine divine. From his experiences Martin has come to question the idea that she might be infallible, but reveals clearly the power and compassion of one of the greatest living mystics of our time. A teacher who uniquely manages to open up the divinity in all of us.

I'm glad I don't have to go through the process of distilling so much phenomenal experience once again, but pleased with the way the book came out. I learned a tremendous amount in my own passage through devotion, and am pleased to have heard from so many people who the book has helped. Devotion to a human goddess figure takes westerners way beyond the norms of their lives, and I do reckon this book gives a helping hand to anyone who connects with such a devotional path in any way. I reckon it's a gentle and beautiful book, and am happy with that. It offers a tremendous amount of new information but never tries to answer all the questions it poses .... everyone is entitled to their own level of mystery, and not all mysteries need to be unravelled. If you choose to read this book, thanks for the attention you will be giving to it. It's much appreciated.
'I am walking down the hill toward a German village because people say God lives there. She is at home for the evening and receiving visitors.'
In 1960, in a village in southern India, a sickly child named Kamala is born. Soon she is 'discovered' and guided out of the poverty of her peasant background – into the world stage as an incarnation of the Divine Mother. Now known as Mother Meera, she is a figure shrouded in mystery and wonder.
Today Mother Meera lives in a small town in Germany. Over 40,000 people from around the world have made the pilgrimage to her, seeking enlightenment. She teaches only through her profound gaze and remarkable touch, and asks nothing – no money, no allegiance – from those who choose to follow her.
In 1995, Mother Meera authorised celebrated novelist Martin Goodman to write her official biography, granting him unprecedented access to her life and history. The book he wrote was completely destroyed on her orders. This is the work that rose from the ashes of those burned pages – a deeper, more subjective story that nevertheless remains one of profound admiration. Filled with the beauty and drama of a mystic novel, it paints a remarkable portrait of a genuine contemporary mystic on a mission to bring divine light into the world.
'The only reliable biography to date of the modern master known as mother Mera ... Gifted with the ironic eye of the novelist and tender heart of the born seeker ... Very inspiring.'
