From the Author:
Concise, readable, well-illustrated medical physiology text.
This is a book for first and second year student of medicine (or related disciplines) who are studying physiology and pathophysiology. It is intended to be a readable, didactically strong text that can be used as a companion to course lectures and syllabi, or even as a primary source in integrated or problem-based curricula. The text is written FOR the student and emphasizes the important principles in physiology rather than minutia. It's strengths are the easy-to-read text, the numerous tables and illustrations, the bolded equations with every term defined, the sample problems with complete numerical solutions, the clinical physiology correlations set off in boxes, and the abbreviations and normal values conveniently placed on the inside covers.

I developed this book out of deep respect for my students and for the learning process. Therefore, I have written to the student (not to my peers), I have emphasized and re-emphasized the important principles through clear language, step-wise reasoning, and multiple examples. I have included essential information, but excluded "nice to know" details of a reference nature. It is a "teaching" book. I believe a book can teach if the teacher's voice is present, if the material is carefully selected, and if great care is paid to logic and sequence. I strove for a professional and accurate presentation that also is down-to-earth and student-friendly. Above all, my hope is that the student will become accomplished and comfortable in applying the principles of physiology, both in the classroom and in clinical practice.

The question may arise as to whether this is a USMLE review book. I believe that for most students, it is too long for this purpose. However, an important factor in doing well in physiology on USMLE is to have learned the subject well in first and second year coursework - this book is intended to facilitate that process and, in that way, contribute to your success on USMLE. (Physiology, Board Review Series, Second Edition from Williams and Wilkins is intended for USMLE review.)

I would appreciate your comments and suggestions. Thank you for considering Physiology, (Saunders Text and Review Series).

Synopsis:
This work presents the underlying principles of cellular physiology and then covers the major organ systems - autonomic nervous system, neurophysiology, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, acid-base, gastrointestinal, endocrine and reproductive. It emphasizes clinical correlations through boxed case studies of classic disorders and explains clinical findings in terms of the underlying physiologic principles. Sample problems are provided together with numerical solutions and explanations of their application. Featured throughout the text are rhetorical questions which are posed in order to build reasoning skills and help students apply the principles they have learned.
