Synopsis:
This is the story of Captain Haines of the Indian Navy during the 15 years he governed Aden, from his battles with Sultan Mahsin of Lahej, and of his tragic death in 1860. From the moment that Aden was chosen as a suitable coaling-station for the new steamships on the Indian trade route, Haines became the spearhead of an exciting sequence of events. The reader is taken through these turbulent events that turned a barren headland and a derelict village of 600 inhabitants into a thriving international market-place of 20,000.
