When Padraig Harrington won the British Open Golf Championship in 2007, he became only the second Irish golfer to win a Major, after Fred Daly in 1947. But Harringtons great achievement was more than the breaking of a hoodoo: it was the start of the most glorious period in the history of Irish golf. And theres good reason to believe the story wont end there. Having won in 2007, Harrington retained the Claret Jug in 2008 and added the USPGA for good measure in the same year. 2009 was a fallow year for the Irish, but we came roaring back in 2010 when Graeme McDowell won the US Open, to be followed by victory in the same tournament by Rory McIlroy in 2011. The phenomenal McIlroy, the biggest prodigy in world golf at present, came within a whisker of winning the US Masters as well. And then in the summer of 2011 Darren Clarke, reckoned by some to be the most talented of all but the one least likely to win, strolled to victory in the British Open. The Irish Majors is the story of great victories and of the background that made it all possible. Philip Reid has the inside track on these Irish triumphs and he brings it all home in this celebratory book.
